The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has today convened a virtual extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on the repeated incidents of desecration of copies of the Holy Qur’An.
The Azerbaijani side was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Fariz Rzayev.
Addressing the session, the Azerbaijani Deputy FM noted that such reckless actions as desecration and burning of the Holy Qur’An in foreign countries, presented under the pretext of freedom of expression, are unacceptable. He also called on the relevant state institutions to combat islamophobia.
Moreover, F. Rzayev also noted that Azerbaijan became a victim of Islamophobia from the first days of its independence, saying that Armenia occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories, destroying a large number of mosques, and symbols of Islamic heritage. According to him, instead of hatred and violence, Azerbaijan promotes multiculturalism and tolerance, hosting a number of high-level events as a platform for intercultural and interreligious dialogue.
Following the extraordinary session, the participants adopted a resolution on the above mentioned issue.
