On January 25, Chargé d’Affaires of the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Azerbaijan, Seyyed Jafar Aghayi Marian, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, the Azerbaijani side lodged a protest against the ongoing campaign in Iranian media outlets, which are aligned with government circles, targeting Azerbaijan and its leadership.
It was emphasized that the groundless protest expressed to Azerbaijani ambassador, who was summoned to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the expansion of the campaign in the Iranian media following the 16th meeting of the “State Commission on Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran” held in Tehran after a long hiatus, as well as productive official meetings, cause bewilderment.
It was mentioned that instead of Imam Jom’a Seyid Hassan Ameli apologizing for the insulting statements made against Azerbaijan during the meeting in Ardabil, conducting a campaign supporting Ameli and the participation of several religious figures, including the Imam Jom’a of Gazvin, in anti-Azerbaijan activities are unacceptable.
The Azerbaijani MFA underlined that such actions damage bilateral relations, stressing that measures must be taken to prevent these actions.
The Iranian chargé d’affaires expressed regret over some unpleasant statements and actions, and promised to bring this matter to the attention of the relevant authorities of his country.
