Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, met with Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), on the sidelines of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
During the meeting, they discussed prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the IOM across various areas, as well as potential partnerships within the framework of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency.
Minister Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan’s role as COP29 President and the ongoing negotiation process. He underscored the importance of Azerbaijan’s decision to lead efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainability.
As a climate-affected country, Azerbaijan has placed environmental protection at the core of its national development strategy well before assuming the COP29 Presidency. The Foreign Minister reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to contributing to global climate efforts during its term as President.
Director General Amy Pope congratulated Azerbaijan on assuming the COP Presidency and wished the country success in its initiatives. She noted that climate change has contributed to human migration, and the IOM is focused on supporting adaptation and addressing damages affecting displaced individuals.
She emphasized the importance of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency in advancing the priority of climate finance to address such issues.
The parties also exchanged views on other matters of mutual interest.
