With just one week until the launch of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, leading international organizations are placing strong emphasis on the upcoming event in Baku.
Organizations such as the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the United Nations Foundation, and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) have shared messages on social media highlighting the importance of COP29 as a pivotal platform for addressing the climate crisis.
Andries Gryffroy, a CoR member, underscored the crucial role of regions and cities in climate negotiations, stating, “The next climate conference is very important for us to emphasize the Green Deal, not only in mitigation but also in adaptation. I hope we can highlight our local and regional roles in this global Green Deal.”
The UN Foundation noted the impacts of climate change and the urgent need for adaptation funding, describing COP29 as a unique opportunity for world leaders to secure the necessary financing for developing countries that are most vulnerable to climate change.
The Green Climate Fund echoed this sentiment, stating that COP29 will be a critical venue for negotiators to agree on financing the urgent climate actions needed worldwide. “Each climate project funded by the Green Climate Fund aims to create a sustainable and habitable planet for everyone. The Fund views COP29 as a significant opportunity,” the GCF emphasized.
