Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan`s Foreign Minister, met with Gwi-Yeop Son, the Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia of the UN Development Coordination Office.
The meeting focused on the current cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and various UN specialized agencies, as well as preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Bayramov emphasized Azerbaijan’s long-standing, fruitful cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies. He noted that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) hold a special place in the cooperation agenda, and Azerbaijan`s voluntary submission of reports on the implementation of the SDGs indicates the importance the country attaches to this area. The minister underlined that humanitarian demining, declared as the 18th National Sustainable Development Goal, is one of the most important security challenges the country faces during the post-conflict period. “Considering the urgency of this problem for many countries, this initiative is constantly promoted within the UN.”
“Azerbaijan’s commitment to combating climate change and protecting the environment is evident in the application of green technologies, including “Smart village” and “Smart city” concepts, especially in liberated territories.”
Emphasizing that this year is momentous for Azerbaijan`s chairmanship of COP29, Minister Bayramov hailed the further enhancement of cooperation with the UN in this area. He underscored that Azerbaijan`s chairmanship in COP29, as well as all other efforts made by the country in fighting global threats, is an inclusive and result-oriented process. Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan will also host the World Urban Forum and World Environment Day in 2026.
Gwi-Yeop Son commended Azerbaijan`s achievements in preparing for COP29 in a short period of time. The regional director noted that the UN welcomes Azerbaijan`s active participation in the promotion of multipolarity, as well as its demonstration of innovative and creative approach.
