Azerbaijani chess player Khagan Ahmad (rapid rating: 2290) commented on his victory against Hikaru Nakamura (USA, 2804), the world’s second-ranked player in the FIDE ratings, during a blitz match at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships in London.
Ahmad shared his reflections on his performance with the official website of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation.
Ahmad described the championship as unforgettable: “When I learned the day before that I’d face Hikaru Nakamura, the entire team was buzzing with excitement. The game started with some tension, and my opponent made a few mistakes. Nakamura tried to find a way to force a draw, but I felt the pressure in the position. Honestly, this victory thrilled me – it’s my first win against such a strong player. I hope such successes continue. Unfortunately, my team, Turkish Airlines, didn’t advance to the quarterfinals.”
Ahmad expressed gratitude to his teammates: “I thank our captain, Özgür Bey, and my fellow players. For a team of young chess players, our performance was commendable. We made a strong impression with our results at the championship.”
“After the game with Nakamura, I want to thank everyone who congratulated me,” Ahmad added. “It was heartwarming to see Azerbaijani chess player Rauf Mammadov, competing for another team in London, among the spectators. Rauf was the first to congratulate me after the match, and I’m deeply grateful to our national champion.”
