AZERBAIJAN, UN DISCUSS PROSPECTS FOR COOPERATION

Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met Wednesday with Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The meeting focused on the current state and prospects for relations between Azerbaijan and the UN, preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Azerbaijan’s priorities as COP29 President.

Highlighting Azerbaijan’s role in multilateral diplomacy and within UN institutions, the UN Deputy Secretary-General commended the country’s successful efforts to host the COP29 Conference.

The sides also underlined the significance of the UN Summit of the Future Outcome Document, which reflects key elements such as peace and security, new technologies, and the future of financial architecture.

Regarding Azerbaijan’s progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the parties hailed the significant developments in this area.

FM Bayramov highlighted the negotiation process during Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency, emphasizing the importance of consensus in determining the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance. In this context, the sides stressed the need for assistance from the UN and international financing institutions.

Jeyhun Bayramov also informed the UN official about the 14 initiatives proposed by the COP29 Presidency, covering various topics.

The meeting also dealt with other issues of mutual interest.
