AZERBAIJAN’S FM MEETS WITH US DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov has met Thursday with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Erika Olson.

The pair discussed US-Azerbaijan bilateral relations, present situation in the region, steps undertaken to normalize Azerbaijan-Armenia relations.

Minister Bayramov pointed out that Azerbaijan as a country, which came forward with an initiative to normalize Azerbaijan-Armenia relations and sign a peace treaty, is interested in successful results of the process. However, the Minister touched upon Armenia’s attempts to derail the peace process, its provocative statements and provocations as well as the fact that this country had not still replied to Azerbaijan’s last proposals during the past 6 weeks. As an example of Armenia’s disruptive actions, Bayramov referred to violence against Azerbaijani servicemen in Armenia notwithstanding the trust building moves by Azerbaijan such as the return of Armenian soldiers shortly after they failed to get their bearings and ended up in the territory of Azerbaijan.

Erika Olson underlined the importance of peace and stability in the region and signing of the peace treaty as the way to achieve this. She noted that the US is ready to support bilateral talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
