
As part of his official visit to the Republic of Kenya, Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan`s Foreign Minister, met with Zeynab Hawa Bangura, Director General of the UN Office at Nairobi.
The meeting saw discussions on various aspects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, possible joint initiatives related to African countries, Azerbaijan`s Presidency of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as the regional situation in the post-conflict period.
Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan’s fruitful cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies, the special emphasis placed on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within this partnership, and the country’s voluntary and regular reporting on the implementation of the sustainable development agenda reflect the importance Azerbaijan attaches to this area.
He stated that the development of cooperation with African countries was one of the country`s foreign policy priorities. The foreign minister underlined that several initiatives have been implemented in this area within the UN so far, and official Baku intends to continue this cooperation.
The sides emphasized the importance of the decisions adopted within the framework of COP29 hosted by Azerbaijan, particularly in terms of advancing climate finance. The two also explored cooperation with the UN Environment Program.
The meeting also reviewed cooperation plans with the UN Office, particularly with UN-Habitat, in connection with the World Urban Forum to be held in Azerbaijan in 2026.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also briefed his counterpart on the current situation and realities in the region during and after the conflict, the large-scale reconstruction and development efforts underway in the liberated territories, and Azerbaijan’s continued efforts to address the mine threat.
